Top Law Schools

I know that OneNote (for windows) and NoteBook (for mac) are "note taking apps." Any idea what the main difference the difference between the two is? Any preferences?

Most importantly, are they worth using?? Thanks

How about the respective websites of the programs to compare?

As far as usefulness, that's going to be an entirely personal matter. I doubt I will get much use out of them, but someone younger than I who is more used to taking notes on a computer will probably find it very useful.

I don't think OneNote would work well with law school note-taking. While some of the features in OneNote are neat for other applications, I don't think they would work for law school note-taking. I'm not in law school currently, but I have taken law courses in undergrad and I primarily used Word to take notes. I did very well in those courses and got a rec letter out of my prof (in case you're wondering). I used word to take notes in outline format.

If you are not currently familiar with styles in Word I suggest you find a tutorial and learn what they are and how you can use them. You can use styles to create robust, collapsible outlines that I think will be far more superior than anything that comes out of OneNote.

I'm new so I'm curious--why is this the wrong place for a question about note-taking software but the right place for a huge thread on laptops?

I didn't make the original post. I'm just inquiring because on the same page as this one is, again, a huge thread on what laptop to buy.

Whoever said Word is better for note-taking clearly doesn't know how to use OneNote. The best part of OneNote is when you are looking for something specific but can't remember what day you took the notes or whatever, you can search for certain terms and it will bring up every instantiation of your query no matter where it is in your notebook. It is also incredibly easy to cut/paste, drag/drop to whatever format you like, and create flowcharts. I don't know anything about the Mac counterpart, but OneNote has changed the way I take notes, and it has improved my study habits/method tremendously (I'm not a law student fyi).

OneNote rocks. The big caveat being you need to take the time you learn how to use it to get the full effect. I use OneNote for everything (ironically except actually taking notes in law school, since I was never really a note taker). But the organizational aspects are great. I use it for work, clients, tracking bills, keeping all my passwords, everything. And it ties in without Outlook with is my other lifesaver. OneNote is GREAT.

Concur on OneNote. In the work environment - project managment - (I left school to work for 6 years and came back and finished my UG senior year), I was forced to use deftly use OneNote. Even if you don't have time to learn to use it properly, it's 10x better than Word. The search function is awesome, outlining is a breeze and moving information is really easy. Also, the auto-save function is pretty clutch. I have used NoteBook as well, but I just don't find the interface and functionality as easy to use.

I have a few gripes with OneNote after extensive use...

1) as with any electronic note-taking device - BACK UP YOUR WORK - my laptop died and I lost an entire semester of notes...luckily the semester was over.
2) You have to go to the beginning of a line to indent a bullet point. This is seriously annoying - especially after having the functionality in Google Docs - another program that I've used to take notes that I think is better than Word (easier to organize).

Those are really my only complaints - if you are a column/table user - LEEWS method, etc, OneNote is also easier to use than Word.

Bottom line, Word sucks for taking notes.

the thing is, im considering getting a mac for law school. ive used a dell all my life, but im not happy with it. im just concerened that getting a mac isnt worth it if ill be using window's onenote for notetaking and windows for testing.... any thoughts? whats been your experience?

I've heard elsewhere that one of the actually useful things I might do over 0L summer is learn to be a pro at using OneNote.

Any thoughts on the best way to do so? I've poked around in it a little, but there's only so much pretend note-taking and organizing I can do.

thanks a lot! so crossover allows you to run the onenote program without installing windows? thats pretty cool...

You do have to install Windows; however, you do not need to run bootcamp.

Then, that sucks... I just purchased "Parallels" and I do have to install Windows.

Parallels works like vmware, it is a complete install visualized. Crossover is an emulator. Sometimes with crossover, a feature or two may not work correctly. (For instance, OneNote 2010 doesn't yet run.) in Parallels or vmware, it will run flawlessly though you will use slightly more battery/processor power since it is running windows as well.
