Everyone on TLS seems to think they will be top 10%. Since thats not realistic, lets take a student at median after 1L who is at a regional school which dominates its region (secondary market). What realistic choices does such a student have?

From what I've seen, it sounds like you better have some connections.

Well maybe 10% are right.
What type of internship? Major law firm, free legal clinic, paid or unpaid, prosecutor's office, etc.?

Depends. I'm at a semi-regional T-25 with median grades that co-dominates a secondary market and I got the summer internship I wanted and thought I didn't have a chance at - a lot of people floating around median did.
Its not all about grades - some people with better grades than mine had to settle for their 2nd or 3rd choices.

Well it depends on the kind of internship. Paid, prestigious legal internship? median kid has a much harder shot at getting it w/o connections.
however, getting an unpaid legal internship that is not as prestigious should not be that hard if you work to get one.
btw, if anyone wants an internship at HSBC, Dell, or UN in Panama over the summer shoot me a message and I will hook you up as I have three slots left to allocate.
