Top Law Schools

So, call me silly. I am trying to cach up with everyone as they talk about different tiers of law schools (Tier 1, Tier 2, T14, TTT, ect)

To set the record straight, what does it all mean? Is it by proxy of the official law school rankings? What schools are in which Tiers? is T14 also T1?

T13 = Top 12 law schools in the country + Cornell
Tier 1 = Top 50 law schools
Tier 2 = 50-100
TTT/TTTT = everything else

Why thank you! So would a T14 then be a Tier 1 school as well? Would then University of Chicago (ranking 31) be considered a Tier 3? Is that the same thing as being TTT?

The Cooley rankings are often mocked and absurd. Referencing them in this thread is an example of that.

I appreciate this. People talk about them all over the boards, but I haven't really been around on this forum long enough to quite have grasped everything. I feel like there are tons of references thrown around, but nothing completely concrete to tie them into.

Please read the first link. Things will make so much more sense.

The typical US News breakdown is:

Tier 1- Top 50 schools
Tier 2- 51-100
Tier 3- 101-150
Tier 4- The rest

However, be aware that there are far more important "tiers within tiers" than US News accounts for. The difference between the 10th ranked school and the 20th ranked school (10 spots) is actually FAR bigger than the difference between the 48th ranked school and the 68th ranked school (20 spots). A Tier 1 school ranked in the 30s or 40s is far closer in terms of placement to a Tier 2 or Tier 3 than to another Tier 1 like Yale or Harvard. For example, even though they are both Tier 1 schools, there is a huge difference between the placement of a school like Michigan (9th) and a school like University of Georgia (35th). It is important to assess schools based on national portability, regional dominance, and placement, and then compare them against their peers.

A lot of TLS users break things down this way: Top 3>Top 6>Top 14>Top 30>Everyone else

Once you get into the "everyone else" category, it is more important to start considering things like where you want to practice and how much debt is worth incurring.
