As a black male,..would I be competing for offers against other minorities because of diversity initiatives, or with everybody? Just curious. I plan on enrolling at UVA.

every firm or corporation i have worked for made it clear that being a certain race did not matter to them. the best grades got the job. its not like law admissions where you get a urm boost.

I was actually under the impression that law firms, as well as companies in general all have some sort of internal 'quota' they'd like to fill in terms of recruiting minority applicants/hires.

No. You automatically become a white male when you accept a job offer from BigLaw.

Either way, don't use it as a crutch.

Just for starters: 1L diversity fellowships--best chance of getting 1L employment at a firm. These benefit any person of diversity though not just those that get a LS admissions URM boost.

Firms want more diversity b/c their clients are demanding it. Diversity is one of those extra factors like work experience and personality.

From what I have seen it works very much like law school applications. Firms dig a lot deeper into the rankings for URM's.

Yes, but you won't make equity partner - ATL has a shitton of blogs about how firms hire minorities just to boost their minority numbers, but most of their senior minority attorneys end up staying as salaried partners (a.k.a. glorified associate).

People who run law firms are probably going to be the same douchy peers you'll have at UVA in the future - the ones who think you got a 160/2.5 but got in anyways because you're black.
