Is it at all helpful for current students and/or alumni to send e-mails on your behalf to the admissions committee? Over and above regular LORs. Or is that overkill/annoyance?

1) Is the alumni President Obama?
If yes, then continue to 2.
If no, then the answer no.

2) Does he know you personally and can speak to your credit?
If yes, then yes, it will definitely help.
If no, then it probably isn't a good idea.

Really, it doesn't have to be Barack Obama, but it needs to be someone of import with the university. Otherwise, it won't really help beyond a normal letter of rec.
