life for those who dont get big law jobs..

i'm curious if anyone can comment on life for those who take on a considerable amount of debt (120-210k) and dont get the big law jobs or don't take a job that will qualify for loan repayment?
i'm currently making 65k with no debt, granted in nyc, but definitely don't feel like i'm killing it by any means. my thought is that with debt i'd be borderline broke and considering the vast majority of people come out of law school with debt and dont get big law jobs, you'd have to be crazy to go to law school. however, it seems each year competition gets stiffer and stiffer, so can law school really be that bad or are people on this forum making it seem worse than it is? or are people just retarded?

The consensus on this board is that life is pure agony for people who don't make 6-figures.

People are retarded.
People go to law school because they believe lawyers make a lot of money.
They have every reason to think so because their family/friends/media presents lawyers as both well regarded and well paid individuals.
The former is still true (even if you do personal injury) but the latter is not anymore (it probably was true back when their were only 100 law schools - however long ago that was).
I told a friend back home that I was going to law school, and she was like when I finish, I will have my name on a billboard and commercials on tv (like it was a good thing - I'm not saying it's not). I was like pppppssssshhhhh what? No thanks.
That fact that lawyers aren't compensated well has not stopped potential applicants from viewing being a lawyer as something that will leave them in high regard. So they apply, get in - get out, then
There are many different types of employment available for lawyers when they graduate.
But for the people chasing $$$, they have to consider this:
"If I miss big law, would law school be worth it?"
i.e. 3 years for a degree + $120,000-$200,000 in debt = not big law or less than $80,000 a year vs. 3 years of experience + no debt = probably between $40,000-$80,000 (depending on major) a year (not to mention other options, such as working for 2 years and getting an MBA the third year - or any other combination)

I'm starting to have serious doubts about entering into law school. I have always wanted to be a lawyer but I think the being 120,000+ in debt is something I am starting to freak about about. Esp how am I going to pay this back? How will affect my credit score - someone correct me if I am wrong on this but aren't Graduate Plus Loans based on your credit? If so, I didn't know if borrowing a lot of money would affect your credit score.
I don't have the desire to go big law, I mean don't get me wrong it would be nice, but for me I don't see it happening. Even if I decided to retake the LSAT, I'd have to have a drastic improvement to get into where I want to go or get any type of scholarship money. As of right now the only place I have been accepted to is the middle of nowhere, and that is also something that hasn't quite set right with me. I still haven't had a chance to visit the school due to snow - its finally starting to warm up. I am having serious doubts. But how do you just give up on a dream that you have wanted for so long?

I say quit being a pussy and power through it. If you want to be a lawyer, and you like the practice of law, then just do it and be good at it. Don't listen to the heralds of doom on this board, if you're GOOD at it you'll do fine. And if this is a dream of yours why not just follow through and see where it takes you?
What's the alternative? Decades of telling your bored spouse, "you know, I could've been a lawyer..." Don't back out like a coward and live with that regret. Just do it.
