Los Angeles vs New York

Post by GermX » Sun Feb 28, 2010 10:46 pm

Where in general is it a better legal market? How's the legal market in Los Angeles anyways (jobs wise, especially big law)? In other words, given a choice between Georgetown and UCLA, which should I choose?

There are more Biglaw jobs in New York, but also more people competing for them . UCLA probably places a lot better in LA than Georgetown does in NYC. If you are gunning for NYC Biglaw, Cornell would be better.

But is Los Angeles viable especially in this economy? I'm asking because I live in LA and honestly as a college grad I could find no good jobs (most pay I got was $15/hr). I'm wondering if the legal market has survived. Do UCLA grads get good jobs in general?

Just don't know if I'm looking forward to cold weather and tiny apartments on the east coast, but my priority is my career so honestly if the East Coast is a more viable location in terms of being successful as a lawyer (assuming you have what it takes), then I would definitely do the move.

Cornell is being annoying, still on "Applied", not even complete status with them yet.

You should choose Georgetown, which will place you into either NYC or LA.

Would UCLA place me well in NYC, or is it a relative unknown there?

UCLA will not place well in NYC compared to Georgetown or even other local schools like Fordham.

Interesting. Well seriously I kind of want an opinion here, do you guys think a lawyer has more potential for success (given statistical factors like most legal jobs, opportunities etc..) on the east or west coast?

The economy sucks everywhere. Both NYC and LA took a big hit. Wall street's woes are felt in LA as if it were right outside of Manhattan. So this choice is more about where you want to practice. UCLA will place better on the West Coast and Gtown will place better on the East Coast, no two ways about it. If it were me, I'd go Bruins because of the weather :)
