T14 Intellectual Property - Rank 'em

What are your opinions on these schools' IP programs? Options are Duke, Michigan, UVA, Georgetown, and any other T14 you feel I'm neglecting unnecessarily. Don't start throwing S, C, & B at me; they have no interest in me and I'm trying to be relatively realistic here.

If you're dead set on IP, would you consider places like George Washington?

Duke or UVA

You have a tech background? Then see generally the USNWR.

Not really, I'd rather go to Vandy, WUSTL, or Emory (or possibly UIUC, for enough $) if I don't go T14. I know and like Vandy, WUSTL has its charms for me (personal reasons), and Emory's TI:GER program and location would put it above GW as well.

So given the fact that UM, UVA, and Duke are all within a place or two of each other on a consistent basis, choosing one particular school's not going to make a discernible difference other than in terms of regional prospects?

Correct. Pick the school you like best.

What type of IP are you talking about and what are your qualifications?

Good. I thought that was the case, but confirmation never hurts. Much thanks.

Patent lit or prosecution. I'll have to see which one strikes my fancy more after I learn a bit more about their respective nuances. Mechanical engineering, so a pretty broad general knowledge base - materials, alternative energy, etc.

ME + T14 = win

Can you derive that from fundamental principles for me? TLS has given me that impression. Really glad I found TLS before it was too late, had no idea there was a T14 dividing line as recently as 3 months ago and I'd have likely screwed myself whilst being googly-eyed at the debt differences between the big boys and everyone else. Not that I'm 100% T14 bound (between uncertainty about getting in at all + weighing region and debt loads), but it's definitely made a difference in my ability to make a well-informed, non-

Image decision.

PS: For any other 0Ls lurking this who are interested in IP, this (vvv) thread offers up a little bit of useful information. Not much in it, but a few useful tidbits.

You can look at the US News Specialty Rankings. George Washington far surpasses the other schools in intellectual property. GW also has better alumni connections in IP law than any other schools.

Never G. Not GW, specialty rankings are retarded.

yes, ignore specialty rankings. GW's IP program far surpasses its other programs, but that doesn't place it above schools like stanford and columbia.

if you are considering schools outside the t14 like GW, then fordham is also definitely worth looking into.

Same major and interests . Same GPA but your LSAT trumps mine. Im trying to crack the T14 but I doubt it. Im also considering WUSTL depending on $$. Good Luck!

Leiter ran a poll on best cyberlaw/IP faculties a few months ago. FWIW http://leiterlawschool.typepad.com/leiter/page/10/

Yeah, a 3.2 ME GPA from a "top 20 Southern private" (Duke, Vandy, Emory?) + any T14 = win. Your tech background matters a lot for IP jobs.

TBF, I hadn't been shown the light of the T13 yet.

Vandy Engineering. Glad I stumbled onto the road to success, even if it was by accident. T14 probably won't be happening at this point, but maybe my undergrad will partially mitigate the damage done by the drop to Vandy or even WUSTL.
