Top Law Schools

I was just wondering this because I was a finance major. I know admissions look favorably upon hard science majors because they take much more work than most and the average grades are lower. I am not positive if this is true, but I feel as if finance and accounting grades are also lower than say, poli sci. Also, they are rarer (among law school applicants, not in general).

Question: Do these majors get a bump?

finance major here. would also love to know although my bet is it does not get a bump.

Not sure if anyone has an idea about this, so we might have to wait for acceptances to find out.

Accounting major here. From what I've read/seen/heard, majors such as ours just stand out among our peer applicants. For example, with all else being equal Accounting student X with a 3.5ish/170 would be favored over History major Y with a 3.5ish/170, but not History major Z with a 3.7ish/170.

Then again, this could all be hearsay as its only through the grapevine. I think the better benefit comes from being better equipped to manage your personal finances once you are an attorney as well as during interview season when applying for spots in corporate or M&A practice groups.

And yea, I think I have definately learned some useful skills, however as long as I am waiting for acceptances, they are all I really care about.

What about economics minors? I am graduating with a Finance & Admin. major and Economics minor.

Yea, I have heard minors are relatively unimportant. Plus, Economics is one of the more popular UG majors for law school. I believe it is only behind Poli Sci and History. Even ahead of Philosophy and English.

Edit: I meant to ask. Is Economics mostly math or more soft science type stuff? I really have no idea what econ UG's do. I know graduate Econ gets pretty serious into stats and econometrics.

The best answer is that it depends for UG. I know that at my UG, there is Business Economics in the B-School and Quantitative Economics in the College of Arts and Sciences. The former requiring more core business classes (finance, accounting, and marketing classes) and the latter requiring more math classes (Additional calculus classes/diff eq.)

Holy crap I hated the core business courses. Intros to marketing, human resources, and a course called 'strategy in action' were possibly the worst waste of time ever. I also had some pretty bad courses in the 'entrepreneurship' major, however the good entrepreneurship courses made up for them.

Economics is right in the middle ground. Most stats or math majors who take Econ courses at my undergrad think they are incredibly easy (because of the math) while International Relations and PoliSci students think they are ridiculously hard (because of the math).

At my UG, if you can take a derivative and integrate a basic function, that's all the math you need for econ.

(For the record, post-grad work in Econ is MUCH different. You would need upper-level calculus, linear algebra, etc. to do well from what I understand.)

You're right about this. Advisers at my UG tell econ students interested in doing graduate work in economics to take the quant-econ major I wrote about in an earlier post.
