What are your career goals? Also note that Seton Hall is in reasonable commuting distance, but not in NYC.

have worked in finance for several years now and would like to go into capital markets regulation having seen the madness over the past few years. prob would like to work at a big firm for a few years to make some cash and then maybe work for the gov... i'm a little hesitant about debt though because i know how ruthless it can be working for a large firm and don't want to feel like i have no choice...

Based on your goals, even w/a nice scholly, you have little chance of breaking into corporate work from Seton Hall.

If you had other goals it would be a more reasonable choice but given your two options I'd go Fordham. In better years they place reasonably well into biglaw. But you have to face the fact that you would still be taking a dangerous gamble because of the debt and the fact that you will still have to be high in class rank at Fordham.

In 2008, we placed 43.7% of the class into NLJ250 firms. 2009 has not been released, but given the state of the economy, no school is doing as well as it used to do.

A Fordham student will still have many more options than a Seton Hall student, given decent (even if not stellar) grades. We also have an enviable alumni network at NYC firms.

I think they are asking whether or not they should pay full tuition at Fordham or go to SHU with a scholarship. It's inconsistent, but seems to be a common error on this site.

OP- Did I assume correctly or did you get a full ride to Fordham?

Is there a nasty GPA requirement attached to that money? If so, Fordham for sure.

He would be paying sticker at Fordham, and going to Seton Hall on a 35K per year scholarship.

Given the context ^ is correct, but I read it the same way as Lxw. "Full scholarship" comes to mind more readily than "full price," positive thinking FTL

There always is at most T2 schools, except for a few guaranteed full rides. IMO schools should be banned from doing it.

The requirement was a 3.0 GPA

Owing to my inability to be unbiased, I won't give OP any more advice, but if SHU's curve is like ours, that's not too far below median. Some schools do curve to 3.0, however, or even 2.7-2.9, which would make that a nasty requirement.

What's the curve like? A median requirement isn't too terrible, but anything above that I wouldn't chance.

To clarify...I was comparing going to fordham at full price vs. Shu with 35k annually and the only stipulation that I remain in the top 50 percent.

To follow up on another post...does anyone know about the brooklyn law international business law fellowship?

I messed up. The requirement is to stay in the top 50% of the class. I don't know what the specific requirement is.

While I have a really hard time recommending anyone to attend Seton Hall, I'd be sorely tempted to take that offer ITE. 50 percent requirement isn't horrific; I managed to stay on the right side of the curve while treating LS like a part time job (i.e. putting less than 30 hours of work per week into it - and that's including class time), and I go to a school that's renowned for competitiveness and intense studying.

That's not to say you should take LS lightly - really, I don't recommend anyone to be as casual as I was - but it is to say that a top 50 percent isn't too high of bar to get over. Were they asking for a top third placement, I'd tell you to say no, thanks. As it is, it's a tough call.
