Optional essay question

I know I'm being redundant here but I have to ask. I'm wondering if I should write my optional essay. I looked at the previous posts and some of them said that if you don't have anything new to say, don't write it. I feel that my personal statement covers the topic of diversity and most importantly, i think that if I write an optional essay, it'll sound generic.
So what should I do?

If you can't write a compelling diversity statement that covers new ground, don't force one on to paper.

i felt the same way, having touched on the topic of my DS in my PS, but i think you should try to write the DS. its not going to hurt, and if you have any more information you can share i think it would be to your advantage. they won't think its redundant if you would actually add diversity to the class because you've overcome racial/socioeconomic barriers, they'll just be more impressed.

Would writing a generic essay hurt more thant not writing one at all?
I'm just worried that it woldn't be up to par.

Writing a bland essay would be more hurtful than helpful, especially if the essay covers material already mentioned in your PS.

The only way it could hurt is if it is written badly. Otherwise, do what makes you comfortable, but realize that the optional essay is there to allow the applicant to inform the admissions committee about an aspect of yourself that is not on your resume or transcripts. I personally wouldn't rehash information.
