YALE Invitation to apply?

There was a short, limited thread about this last cycle and I'm reaching out to those who have gotten the letter for this cycle.

BIG envelope postmarked Dec 23.

Opening cover letter reads:

"Dear Mr. *******,

Our search for the students who will make up the Class of 2013 leads me to write to you. Your name was made available to us through the Candidate Referral Service (CRS) sponsored by the Law School Admission Council. We ask the CRS to give us the names of a small group of highly qualified minority applicants whose undergraduate grades and test scores suggest that they are individuals whose applications we would like to review fully. Our records indicate that you have not yet applied to Yale Law School. I write this letter to encourage you to do so.

We cannot, of course, guarantee that you will be admitted...

[Information regarding the Asian community at Yale, specifically mentioning the Pacific Islander, Asian and Native American Law Student' Association (PANA)]

Sincerely,
A*** R*******
Associate Dean"

Enclosed are some tips from PANA, including several PS examples and 250-essay examples.

On LSAC, I'm technically marked as "Other Asian," though I wouldnt consider this URM status.
My scores (OBVIOUSLY below Yale caliber):
GPA: 3.7 from large state school
LSAT: 166

What're your thoughts? My main question is why...? Dont they get enough applicants?

Sounds like you were sent the message strictly based on your numbers and ethnic status. I'm sure they have a numbers range where they say "we'd like to see what else, other than the numbers, these people have to offer the school." Then, you'd probably have to have some killer softs to actually be one the people from that population who are considered. One other note: they may very well have a target for how many people, from the letters they send out, they want to take from that (your) pool.

Just my two cents...

Hey! I got the same thing and I was wondering what to do also. Are you planning to contact the admissions folks or the 3L the letter listed?

Well, no matter what, it was nice to receive such a warm letter, wasn't it? I thought their invitation to apply was one of the most encouraging.

I got a brochure, fee waiver request, and a letter. Nothing specific to ethnicity since I'm a generic white guy and there's no cool white guy clubs at Yale I guess.

Yale is a white guy club. Acually, a rich white anglo-saxon protestant club. Everyone else is decoration.

Thanks for starting this thread. I received one targeted to Latino students, but am still pretty sure I won't apply. While my LSAT is fantastic, Yale hasn't accepted someone with my GPA in...forever. *shrugs*

Now I have false hope that they will use me to fill their upper-middle class Irish atheist guy quota.
