Should I write a DS?

Currently, my PS centers around growing up as an immigrant and how our financial situation eventually led to an abusive relationship with my parents (and how I've overcome that adversity). This is probably the same topic I'd choose to write about if I did write a DS (the economic hardship/struggle, the abuse, etc., and how it changed my perspective).
I don't want to write a completely redundant diversity statement, though, since that would probably adversely affect my application, and writing about the same thing might run the risk of being redundant.
Is a diversity statement in this case necessary? Or does my PS serve as both in this situation? I also don't want to seem like I'm skimping out/putting in less effort, either.
Thanks
