Idea for a personal statement

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Sep 20, 2019 6:30 pm

Would a personal statement about being denied from a law school a few cycles ago be cliche? Have worked at building my resume, but I just wanted to see what TLS thinks before I commit to the idea.

I wouldn't. Surely something more interesting has happened in your life.

Are they really harsh on cliche personal statements even when someone's genuine about them?

It's not that it's cliché. It's that it's a very weird topic that makes it sound like your entire life has revolved around law school admissions. It doesn't do what a personal statement is meant to do, because it doesn't tell them anything about you as a person who exists outside of the other application materials.

Did something else happen in your life in the same period? Or was the rejection framed by another difficulty or challenge you faced? I think it can be compelling if brought up as part of a larger story- so the theme is more about persistence and overcoming adversity vs. specifically being rejected from law school

This is the equivalent of starting a first date w/a pity party about your ex.
