Is this worth a Diversity Statement?

No. You can always write it, but diversity statements are more for highlighting people from backgrounds that are broadly underrepresented at the school. I think you kind of already know this, which is why you're questioning the mentor's advice.
Sounds like it might be an interesting personal statement, though.
