This is a fine idea. You hit the nail on the head that you don't want to come off as melodramatic. It's a serious situation, and you shouldn't downplay that, but you definitely want to steer the essay in the direction of how this experience shaped you as a person. I wouldn't worry about it being too dramatic as a topic; it'll all come down to how you approach it.
