I've heard conflicting things about writing a diversity statement if you're a pretty mainstream applicant as myself. Some have told me you can write about a diverse perspective you have gained from an experience, rather your race, ethnicity, etc. Would it be appropriate to write about how I had an internship that I observed forensic interviews daily for abused/neglected children and also interacted with the families? This experience has drastically shaped my perspective on the true nature of child abuse and the implications that it has on the family - I've heard the stories first hand. What are your thoughts?

No. That doesn't make you "diverse" in the way it's viewed by law schools. It could be a PS.

Why do people keep trying to make this a thing?

No, this could be more of a reason for practicing a certain type of law. Too many people try to "force" - diversity statement. It should be directly about you, and what makes you different from a standard candidate, not just about an experience that really isn't about you.
