Does answering this have any advantage if I identify as a male and I am a male? It says to write something if you do want to explain and/or why you don't want to explain.

If you are male and identify as male just put that you are male.

No one can answer that for you. They're asking if your gender identity matches the biology you were born with. If it does just say yes. It's an opportunity to explain that you're transgender or don't identify as any gender. If that doesn't apply to you don't worry about it.

The question I'm talking about asks you if you want to explain your response OR nonresponse. Just wondering if anyone has any idea if explaining either way will have any kind of benefit.

This is a great opportunity to let Harvard know who you want to identify as. On my application I crossed off gender and put animal. I then wrote an essay on how I identify as a lion and included an MP3 of Katty Perry’s hit song Roar. I haven’t heard back yet but I am pretty sure it tipped the scale in my favor.

I also explained how I identified as someone with a 180 LSAT score. Although, that isn’t what I got on the test, it was what I identified as. So, I think they should take that into consideration.

Mod edit: user has been banned for trolling

I have to believe you're being willfully ignorant at this point. The explanation box is only for people who would identify as transgender, gender neutral, or nonconforming.

On the offchance that you're being serious, playing cute on a question that is a very serious matter for a number of people will only make you look bad.

I really did not mean to offend nor was my intention to troll. I am being completely serious, and I do not make light of the gender question in any way. The wording of the question is simply open for anyone to answer.

IF you looked at the HLS application you see that it goes straight from 1. biographical information to 2. gender identity. In the biographical information YOU ONLY HAVE THE OPTION OF MALE OR FEMALE and the gender identity portion asks you about your answer to the previous choice (male or female).

So you may see why I'm confused and asking this in the first place. Regardless of my own gender identity, I felt that answering the question may give an opportunity to present an extra characteristic of myself to the admissions board and thus help in the end.

You're overthinking this.

If you are cisgender, don't do anything extra.
