Is the "Different Kind of Lawyer" essay essentially a diversity statement? I applied via the NDLS website and the description reads like a diversity statement prompt:
DKL (Different Kind of Lawyer) essay if you want to explore how your own personal background, diversity, experiences, points of view, etc. will contribute to Notre Dame’s mission to educate a “Different Kind of Lawyer.”
NOTE: This is separate from the why NDLS essay.

I ask because they seemed to consider them separate essays in a previous e-mail:
"Thank you for your application to Notre Dame Law School! A copy of your application information is included below.
A member of the Admissions Office will soon email you regarding the status of your application. To complete your NDLS application, please assemble the following documents:
- Your personal statement (required)
- Your resume (required)
- Your Why Notre Dame Law School statement (optional)
- Your Different Kind of Lawyer (DKL) essay (optional)
- Your diversity statement (optional)
- Any further addenda/notes or Character and Fitness information where appropriate"

Ahh. I see. My b. Carry on. (Without actually looking up the program - if there is a site for it, I couldn't help here)

Is there seriously no one here who is applying to NDLS and can provide an answer?

I don't remember that from when I applied. I did a why ND essay, but didn't do any different kind of lawyer essay. For ND, I would recommend doing it just because they tend to focus on holistic admissions and I remember that the people who didn't write the why ND essay were disproportionately dinged compared to those that did. Just make sure you write about something substantive and ask other people to review it.

Call the admissions office and ask. They are very helpful. On another note, they told me that it was in my best interest to do the "why NDLS" essay.

Now that I've taken the time to look at the view book, I thought it was pretty clear what they were looking for. I'd advise taking a look at it if you haven't. It's not a diversity statement, but serves a more specific purpose than your PS, if you so choose.

I am going to do a why ndls essay. Here is what their website says about the DKL essay:
In the “Different Kind of Lawyer” statement, applicants are asked to explore how their own personal background, diversity, experiences, points of view, etc. will contribute to Notre Dame’s mission to educate a “Different Kind of Lawyer.”
Seems to me like a diversity statement. I will just have to submit this instead of my regular one - after I confirm with the admissions office.

There was no DKL essay when you applied? Must be new to their application this cycle.

I was planning on just using my diversity statement as well. But have you asked the admissions office? What did they say?

It is basically a diversity statement. The name was changed so that people would be more inclined to submit one with their application. The admissions office said that they want the subject of the essay tied into Notre Dames motto of educating a different kind of lawyer though.
