Why all the sad PSs?

I'm sure I'm not the only one that has noticed that the majority of Personal Statements seem to be pretty sad/negative in their content (i.e. my parents were abusive, I had some sort of illness, I grew up poor, etc., etc.). Is there is a reason for this? I suppose it paints the picture that the author has overcome adversity (which is great), but if I were an adcom, I'd get worn down (and perhaps start rolling my eyes) by the umpteenth essay on the "rough life" of a law school applicant.
