Was looking for something inspiring to read last night and thought this might make a good thread. Which authors and/or works do you find most inspiring?

I think Madame Bovary is one of the most beautifully written novels.

Anything by David Foster Wallace, especially Infinite Jest which is widely considered to be his magnum opus.

He's also done some fantastic non-fiction.

I typically recoil from confessional-style writing and advice columns, but I picked up Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed (a compilation of her Dear Sugar columns) last year, and it's really stayed with me.

I also read a lot of poetry for inspiration. I've read Medbh McGuckian's On Ballycastle Beach dozens of times. I'll send you some of her stuff

There are two types of people in this world: Dostoevsky people and Tolstoy people. We seem to be in opposite camps.

Dostoyevsky, specifically the Brothers Karamazov. Inspired me as well as my writing in a bunch of ways.

Also, Steinbeck. East of Eden (username), one of the smoothest and most descriptive books of all time.. If you haven't read it, read it

Yes, please do! Reminds me to mention that I love Katie Ford's poetry. Her poems stay with me for hours after I've read them.
