On August 18, 2011, I was driving home from a friend’s house and crashed my car. I was 20 years old and living in my hometown, San Juan Island, Washington, for the summer. It was a single-vehicle accident and there were no other occupants in the car, however, I sustained serious injuries and was medevaced to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, Washington. I was initially charged with a Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol (Washington RCW 46.61.502) but my Blood Alcohol Content (B.A.C.) was .05 and subsequently the charge was reduced to Driver Under Twenty-One Consuming Alcohol (Washington RCW 46.61.503 (4)). I pleaded guilty to the this reduced charge of Driver Under Twenty-One Consuming Alcoholand received a two year deferred sentenced. The conditions of my deferment stipulated that I pay a fine, receive no criminal law violations, comply with two years unsupervised probation, obtain a substance abuse evaluation, attend an alcohol and drug information school, and attend a DUI Victims Impact Panel. As of October 23, 2013 I have completed all the requirements and the sentence has been cleared (expunged?) from my record.

Involvement in a serious, but preventable, car accident has caused me to be more consciousness of my actions. The decisions that led to my car accident were poor and dangerous and since then I have taken responsibility for my actions through probation and personal choices. I am acutely aware of the consequences of drinking and driving and work to prevent others from making the same decisions. Since then, I have had no further incidents, which reflects my character and commitment that this won't happen again. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with further questions.
