So I think that I've found a topic for my personal statement, but I wanted to bounce the idea off you guys and see what you all thought.

When I was a senior in high school I left to study abroad for a year in Austria. I was planning on staying there from August until July, but in January I received the horrible news that someone very close to me was the victim of a date rape. I decided to cut my study abroad experience short so that I could come home and help heal my relative. I plan on studying public interest law and hope to work with victims of sexual abuse, so I think that this is a story that will explain my motives for law school, as well as highlight a few qualities I think will make me a good candidate for admittance.

But... that might be overly optimistic.

What does everyone think? Can I make a compelling personal statement using this topic?

Sure, as long as you make the PS about you, not the relative.

I've heard far worse ideas for a PS. Run with it; see where it goes.
