I noticed a lot of the personal statements are written more like a story than an informative essay, which approach is best to take?

It's a PERSONAL statement, not an informative essay. That should be a clue.

Whichever format serves you best. Not everyone has a flair for story-style writing, and I hate essays riddled with flowery cliches.

However, I think "show don't tell" is a good axiom. Or "verbs not adjectives." Telling the adcom you're "motivated" or "organized" or saying you "have a passion for justice" is pretty much worthless without concrete examples.
