DUI Addendum Critique

On May 9, 2008 I was arrested for DUI in Redondo Beach, CA,. After my arrest, I immediately enrolled into a defensive driving alcohol awareness class and regularly attended AA meetings at a local community center. After a court trial, I was dismissed of all charges from the DMV, however I was convicted of a misdemeanor DUI in the criminal court system. As a result, I was ordered to complete an alcohol awareness program and attend 12 AA meetings, without incurring a loss of my drivers license. Since then, I have successfully fulfilled these requirements and am now eligible to have my record expunged. Furthermore, I have taken the opportunity to speak about the dangers of drunk driving and the potential risks to students at my local high school. I am incredibly thankful to not have hurt anyone due to my negligence and I hope that my consequent actions have convinced you of my extreme remorse and rehabilitation when considering me for admission to your law school.

If you can avoid referencing AA, I would. Unfair as it is since so many practicing lawyers are alcoholics, being an alcoholic is a possible character & fitness problem that law schools might worry about.

Seems fine, but schools may ask for more dates and/or actual records.

On [date redacted for privacy] I was arrested for DUI in [location redacted for privacy],. Not to pile on, but it wasn't your 'negligence' that caused you to drive drunk. It was a poor decision, and you should own up to that much. I'd rewrite as follows:
On [date redacted for privacy] I was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in [location redacted for privacy]. Though [name of the court] dismissed all charges filed by the Department of Motor Vehicles, I was convicted of a misdemeanor DUI and ordered to complete an alcohol awareness program and attend 12 AA meetings. My drivers license was not suspended.
After my arrest, I immediately enrolled into a defensive driving alcohol awareness class. I have successfully fulfilled all the judicially imposed requirements and am now eligible to have my record expunged.
Since the arrest, I have taken the opportunity to speak about the dangers of drunk driving and the potential risks to students at my local high school. I am incredibly thankful to not have hurt anyone due to this exceptionally negligence poor decision.
ETA: definitely agree with CW. You need to have full documentation available upon request. It will help your case if you've got a clean 'record' since this incident, as it's been a few years.

Hey thanks guys I appreciate the comments. I enrolled in AA because my lawyer said it would look good to the courts, I didn't have an issue with drinking, but as a 19 year old sometimes you make stupid decisions so you live and you learn I guess. Thanks again!

Additionally, wasn't attending 12 AA meetings part of your sentence ?

Yea exactly, so the ones I went to prior were able to count as part of that and actually helped me only get 12 as opposed to 19 i think it was.

When selecting a wrongful death attorney or wrongful death law firm, it is imperative you note the experience they have in handling and litigating this unique type of case. Many personal injury law firms either do not litigate or have a reputation for being hesitant to aggressively pursue claims.
