Is this a good topic. During my senior year of high school/summer before freshman year I worked independently on promoting a piece of legislation and then due to my independent work got an internship in my local government. The law wasnt created then but was 2 years later and I received an email thanking me for my help with research on the issue. It was an environmental law, and I want to become an environmental lawyer. Is talking about my experience doing that and how it showed me how environmental change is possible through the legal sector a good topic?

sounds like a good professional essay topic which ties in relevant experiences with your career interests after law school. I think its a good topic, but you should be careful which aspects of the experience you want to focus on since your resume will show that you had the experience.

Focus on a specific aspect of the experience and tie this into to a larger issue in environment law which you want to be involved with in your career. This thematic construct will be a way of showing adcoms how you would be a great environmental lawyer in the future.

Thanks for your advice. My only concern is that my involvement was during my senior year of high school/ summer before college started. Is that too long ago?

Is there something in your college experience which you can relate the high school experience to? If you can manage to bridge a connection, than it should be ok and shows development.

Otherwise, it seems awkward to focus primarily on an experience in high school since it looks like you're living in the past.
