As a high school student and prior to matriculating at X in the fall of 2002, I took two courses at X Community College. Because I was dealing with a dysfunctional and abusive home life at the time, my academic performance suffered and I earned a final grade of “D” in both courses. When I relocated to attend college, I was able to better focus on my personal and academic goals. My grades improved and remained consistent. Thus, I believe the grades on my academic transcripts prior to 2002 and reflected in the LSDAS GPA are not indicative of my true academic capabilities. In addition, I have been consistently employed since acquiring a bachelor’s degree in 2007, and believe my professional record is highly indicative of my current capabilities. I request that the admissions committee please consider the aforementioned in arriving at a decision regarding my application. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I would not include. That's a long time ago, it sounds like you are making excuses or begging for someone's forgiveness, and frankly even if you are not, the schools don't really care about your academic capabilities. They really only care if your GPA fits in with the rest of the class. You will be admitted to those schools where your GPA falls in with the rest of the class. You will not get into schools that are looking for higher GPAs. That's just how it works. And if your grades are really bad, well schools at the bottom let in pretty much anyone who is willing to pay. You don't owe it to anyone to apologize for things that happened a decade ago, water under the bridge.

I disagree. Because of the two Ds, my LSDAS GPA is significantly lower than my Undergraduate GPA. I was dealing with awful physical/emotional abuse at the time when I was a high school student, and it's not an excuse, it's a reason for those Ds. I was an A/B student in college. I think it could make a huge difference. I would be interested in knowing how it comes off as an apology, and if you have any thoughts on rewording it so it doesn't.

Okay fine it doesn't come across as an excuse. Its simply a reason. But it still won't matter for the reasons I mentioned. It reads fine if that's all you want to know.
