Some of the schools I'm applying to are asking for a diversity statement. I wrote one, but I'm not sure what effect it has on people. Please comment and critique? I really appreciate your help.

I enjoyed reading your PS. However, I did spot a few grammatical mistakes. I'll PM you.

so is this a diversity statement or personal statement? If it is a diversity statement, it's about a page too long.

I wouldn't bother including this unless it is required. Diversity statements are just a way for schools to probe background for underrepresentedness when URM isn't clearly checked off on the application for whatever reason.

diversity statements are generally supposed to be just one page. Penns the only one that specifically asks it be kept to one page, but it's generally understood it should be kept to one page. You have a personal statement to explain your story, a diversity statement isn't supposed to be used to do it twice.

Mine's still a bit long, i think. it's exactly 752 words. My PS is actually longer (1,200) and in regards to the novel I wrote. Is there a default length for PS too?

Yeah. Harvard and Upenn asks for limits of 2 pgs 11 font maximum. Others are less stringent but usually ask for 2-3 pgs(ex. Columbia, Stanford). Berkeley is one of the few that asks for one in the 2-4 range. I would look up all your schools. They all have information about this.
