How long should a why X, or any additional essay be?

I'm wondering this as well. The only why X I've submitted was for Cornell, it ended up being a little less than 1 page double spaced. I'm working on why Penn/Mich right now, and am kind of worrying they're getting too long.

Typically no more than one page, double spaced.

Yes. All of the Why X? statements that I have had to write have been 1 page, or 500 words (which is not much more than a page). Write a page to be safe.
