There isn't a single word in your statement as to why you want to be a lawyer. I don't mean to be overly harsh, there just seems to be a bit of a logical jump from A-Z here.

Admins want to know if you have the qualities necessary to be a good lawyer. Everyone writes the trite "why I want to be a lawyer" statement. They already know you want to be a lawyer. I don't they would care why, unless the reason why you want to be a lawyer says something unique and compelling about you. Anyone with admissions experience can jump in and correct me.

Also, I will definitely be changing topics. This was an unorthodox strategy and I wanted to make sure I wasn't completely insane for considering it. Thanks for reminding me that I am, in fact, completely insane!

Half true. Yes Admins want to know that you possess the qualities to succeed at their school. And not everyone writes the "why I want to be a lawyer" statement. But multiple Admission counselors have gone on record and said they reject people because they are left with little to no reason why this person even wants to pursue law. I think it's dangerous to leave that assumption to whoever is reading your essay because they have to fill in the blank otherwise and it may not always be a good assumption.

It's nice that you tried to think outside of the box. I think that strategy works better for smaller elements in larger essays though. Otherwise, the statement starts to sound very kitsch and some AdComms might be turned off by it.

You're absolutely correct. However, this is a terrible topic idea. Sorry.

I know its hard to start afresh but believe me, what everyone is saying is in your best interest. I started over 5 times before I finally got a working draft. Here are my suggestions

1. Do not focus on trying to get a 'strategy' that stands out. As an individual you are unique (so you should automatically stand out). Write about YOU. Not about what others think.
2. Come up with a theme and plan ahead. What are you trying to convey? How are you going to convey this message? Brainstorm!
3. Slow down. Give your audience the chance to know you, explaining situations make them more personal. Which usually is in your best interest.
4. As someone said earlier, make sure your PS shows that u have 'lawyerly traits.' You don't have to tell them that u want to go to law school because they know that. Rather show that you can indeed be a GREAT lawyer.
5. Send out your PS to people on TLS, they are the best critics. Do not only rely on friends and family because sometimes they don't want to hurt your feeling and don't give it to you straight.
