I am using a phrase from a recent paper given to the American Counseling Association, and I am attributing it to the author in the text. My question is, how much citation information do you think is necessary?


In a recent paper she presented on the region, Dr. ____________refers to _______________ as an “_____________.”

Do I need to add where she presented it? to whom? date? What is the least you think I can get by with in a DS, since I am short on space. If you think I need to go the whole nine yards on this, I will probably just cut it.

Just drop a footnote and include the info there.

Thank you for the response! I would like to avoid a footnote. It just seems odd for a diversity statement, and in-text citation just seems more appropriate.

don't cite at all. the way it is laid out in your sentence is sufficient. It will look douchey otherwise

A footnote or in-text citation in one of these statements would look completely out of place and quite dumb. Doesn't matter where she said this. Its not like you are taking credit for her work, as you are clearly attributing the quote to her. Don't make your DS into what will surely be the butt of a joke in the adcom committee meeting.

Thank you for the input! By in-text citation, I meant the sentence as it was written in the original post not parenthetical citation or something like that. I'll leave it as is.
