PS Topic - Too political?

I'm writing my personal statement about individualism and my desire to work defending individual liberties. I didn't want to include politics in my personal statement, but I have two pretty political internships on my resume and I'm editor for a conservative/libertarian paper so I thought it might be better to just own it since they'll know my political orientation regardless. What do you all think? Avoid politics at all costs, or is it ok if I keep it pretty philosophical?
Thanks for your help!

Topic is fine, but execution will determine the answer to your question.

If you keep it very philosophical ad comms may not even know your political orientation. You certainly don't want to alienate your reader, and it's very possible to talk about how much you love personal liberty without alienating a liberal or conservative. Your reader may be radically liberal and still be able to relate and even assume that you hold similar views as long as you don't get too specific.

Liberal or conservative slant should not be a problem, but specific issues could be.

+1
If you write about your experience objectively and don't treat your statement as a soapbox, you'll be fine.

I asked a similar question recently
in this thread and there are a few answers in there that would help you out.

Personally, I wouldn't do it, regardless of your political orientation.
Why? Because there's a chance it will turn some people off and cost you opportunities. Is that fair? Probably not, but it's reality.
