I don't know if this is the right area and I know this is probably a "dumb" question, but how large should my margins be on my personal statement?

I would go with 1 inch margins, unless the application give specific directions otherwise. If you are really cramming for space, and the application does not give a specific guideline, you probably would be alright going as low as .87.

to my knowledge, harvard has the strictest guidelines. So if you follow it, you should be ok for any other school
2 pages, double spaced
11 font, 1 inch margins.
and a readable font, like times new roman

UCLA is a bit more strict but it's one only one that requires 12 pt font 2 pages, double spaced, no mention of margins though so I guess you could do some adjusting... I'd keep it at 1 in though.
From their website:
"Personal Statement (if applying electronically, use an electronic attachment).
Separate essay not to exceed two double-spaced typed pages.
No less than 12-point font.
Discuss any matters relevant to your ability to succeed in law school and the practice of law and any attributes, experiences or interests that would enable you to make a distinctive contribution to UCLA Law or the legal profession."

Thank you for all your help! I think I'm going to keep it at 12 pt, Times New Roman, 1" margins on all sides.
