Personal Statement/General Question

When did "trying too hard" become a bad thing? Seriously, I never understood that notion. We're not talking about being pompous but whats wrong with putting more of an effort in what you do or write? How else can you standout?
Bluntly, is it acceptable that your personal statement might come across that you're trying hard/too hard (depending on the reader).

Putting in effort is different from "trying to hard" because "trying to hard" often comes across as forced or disingenuous.
