The Big Font Debate

is there a FONT that law schools expect.... like for a school that says 2 pages double spaced 12 pt font, can I choose a font that let's me get those three lines fit into those two pages

A serif font that doesn't stand out as unusual. Times New Roman or Garamond. (Garamond is a little more compact if you're worrying about space.)

I guess.... unless the school specifies do they really care?
Harvard says 11 font, one inch margins, two pages
Northeastern says 2 pages, 12 font
so the rest is up to me?!

Times New Roman is a good default to use.

I've found that Arial Narrow is even more compact than Garamond....is that too odd/different?

I find that on PC's and Mac's certain fonts actually are different....
we should compile a list of acceptable fonts so that people may reference this, also what margins are acceptable!
any experts out there?

The amount of time you could spend on this would be better spent simply editing your essays to fit without the hijinx.

What a waste of time. Just pay attention to what schools say. If it's unclear, use TNR and get on with it.

i already edited and it is fine, but it is a legitimate question... some schools say specific rules and some don't

if changing your margins just a bit let's you fit everything on two pages, why debate what is best removed

then follow the rules when they're laid out in front of you and use TNR when they're not. Jesus christ this isn't a "big debate" it's common sense.

Arial, narrow or otherwise, is a san serif font, which are generally looked upon as unprofessional for use with large blocks of solid text on paper (on screen is another debate).
