I'll be honest- I'm distracted so I can't comment on the statement as a whole atm- but in your first sentence it sounds like you're saying your belief in Jesus is inconsequential. I would not open with that.

Normally I'd say don't write about your religion at all but this appears to be well thought out! Again, just from a glimpse.

I read the whole thing. If this is your story, go with it. However, you just know that schools receive a ton of personal statements about growing up religious and changing in college. That doesn't mean yours can't stand out; it'll just be harder to do so. I've only read 3 personal statements on these forums about this topic, and yours doesn't stray too far those.

I'd take out all comments relating religion to irrationality. However, that's hard to do. For your 'coming of age' theme to play out, you almost have to criticize your upbringing. That's just another reason to avoid the whole religion thing.

Without being too blunt...they don't care about your religion. Unless you're applying to private schools (i.e. Pepperdine, SMU, George Mason), the religious overtones will hurt you. Dial it down a bit.

Thanks guys. I understand - I kind of hate the topic too, but it was the only one that seemed to be at least somewhat working. Thankfully, though I think I found a much better topic, which hopefully doesn't have so much suck inherent in it.
