Addendum?

Trying to decided if an addendum is acceptable in my situation:
I'm bringing a 2.29 into my applications, so I feel like should explain it a little bit. Basically throughout college I focused entirely on my work at the radio station and newspaper, to the detriment of my classwork.
I know this is not a good "excuse" per se, because these weren't things out of my control. But I sort of want to let them know that my GPA didn't come from partying all the time or being a dummy, and I actually was productive. For some reason I also feel like I should man up and acknowledge a GPA that stands out like a sore thumb.
So would a four or five sentence addendum along those lines be helpful? Or should I basically draw as little attention to the GPA as possible?
Thanks for the help.
