I started my personal statement and I'm writing about my parents' ongoing custody battles as I was growing up (with more details added in of course) and how it's inspired me to pursue a career in family law. Is this topic too cliche?

It's cliche, but, it also probably is your reasoning for wanting to do family law. So, if you can't come up with anything better, it should be fine. Personal statements don't mean much in the admissions process anyway. It'll only hurt you if it is honestly terrible, or help you if it is something that is the most amazing thing ever written.

It's not cliche'. It's your life and you have the right to write about it.

I think exactly how you write and the quality of paper is what will set you apart from other applicants with the same topic (which you have to do with this topic).

Yes, it is cliche, but it is relevant, so I would stick with it. As long as it is well written I think it has potential to be a very persuasive PS. Good luck
