Tornado Survival Skills

I was reading through your advice after I had finished the first half of my personal statement and I wanted to pick your brains if you all dont mind. I think that my topic is on the bubble as far as risky themes go. I survived a tornado my senior year in highschool that ripped threw my school and killed several friends within 10feet of myself. This was a pivotal, life changing moment in my life. I played football and recieved a scholarship about a month before it hit and, although I always considered myself a team player and enjoyed helping people, I started thinking a little more selfishly my senior year. I wanted to be a star and focused on stats more than I should have. I also changed my mind from wanting to be a District Attorney (to protect my community) to wanting to earn a business degree and make big $. After the tornado destroyed everything around me and I nearly escaped my final judgement, my friends and I went to work pulling people out of the rubble while ruptured gas lines and falling debris were making the air lethal. Seeing the deep rooted good in all of the self sacrificing students, I recommitted my self to my dream of defending the people around me. And so on and so forth.
What do you think about the theme?
How long is too long for one of these things?
