what are legitimate reasons for wanting to go to law school?

just wondering, i need to write a PS and also a paper describing why i want to go to law school to a professor of mine.

I just feel slightly overwhelemd because it seems like most people write wanting to go to LS are like "saving the world" and "saving the dolphins" or whatever.

Is it legitimately fine if i express my wishes of wanting to go into law for other reasons (wanting to delve into transactional, more of the business side, etc.) to the adcoms and my professor?

I know the answer to this question seems like an obvious "yes" but to me it was slightly in the grey area. I asked yself, "Must I emphasize some seemingly bigger broad social goal or vision that i have?"

however I just want your guys' opinions, thanks!

you could make it more personal than your career goals. A lot of feedback I got was that I've never taken a law class and I really don't know all the ways I can use my law degree. Even if you write a heart felt essay or PS about what you're going to do with your law degree, it's likely you'll want to do something else after three years or throughout your career...40+ years is a long time to do something you thought was awesome in your mid 20s

I basically explained how obtaining the skill set/way of thinking from law school is the next step in my professional development and love the flexibility in the degree.

The reasons listed so far are pretty poor reasons for going to law school. Wanting to be a lawyer is pretty much the reason why you'd want to be a law student. You can express this to adcomms, and tie it into a particular area of law if you have a strong inclination, but expressing reasons that don't have to do with law are not always effective.

If you want to be "on the business side," get an MBA.
If you want prestige, job security, interesting work, and money, go to medical school.

Tell him you ride the short bus and do not have any skills that would allow you to pursue any legitimate career. Law is your only option.

The only legitimate reasons to tell your professor are the reasons that YOU want to go to law school. That being said, sugar coating it a bit is probably a good idea.

To have strangers, and family members tell you lawyer jokes and you have heard before and really were never funny.

what? are you saying practicing law has no connection with business, prestige, job security, interesting work and money?

im not saying write about it, if you want to be an attorney for.....whatever it is thats left, then you're going to be a very unhappy person.

the fact is all of the things you listed are very legitimate reasons for being an attorney. Personally i would love to run my own firm with the hope of obtaining prestige, job security, interesting work and money.

i cant run a law firm with the MBA and i missed the boat on med school about 6 years ago.

Hookers and blow. Immediately after you pass the bar you are required to snort a line off the bosom of a Swedish model.

How has no one mentioned that yet?

I was making a direct quote. Obviously lawyering should be interesting to people attending law school. But going into law school with the intention of "running a law firm" (that's more than just a 4 or 5 man small shop) is a poor idea when you have other options. It's the same concept as going to law school to get a job in international law. If your interest is running a business, you should go to business school. If you want to be a lawyer, go to law school. Sure, you might eventually get to run a business with a JD, but the odds are fairly small even from a top school.

Wow GeePee, you know I love you, but this is all wrong.

OP, the answer is to bang chicks with big boobies. Don't make it more convoluted than it already is.
