I agree. Take out the first and third paragraph and then explain why you are a combination of a "doer" and an academic. Tie that back to how you explain that lawyers have to have both a firm knowledge in law and a grip on reality.

Definitely take out the first line about being ten years old. A friend who reads admissions files for PhD programs once told me that every PS that starts with "when I was a little kid" gets thrown in the "no" pile immediately.
and, maybe just an academic bias here, but your statement that arming yourself with a PhD and a la-z-boy would be taking the easy route comes off as arrogant and misguided. Many of the people who are vetting your file and who will be teaching you in law school are academics. Calling what they've done/achieved, if only peripherally, the "easy route" will grate on them - whether you think it's the case or not. There are more humble, intelligent ways to express your desire to blend thought and social change, as your last paragraph clearly demonstrates.
