Are any of you guys getting your books/id before the 23rd/24th? I'm in the city so it seems silly not to. I guess all the sections use the same books?
Also, less than 2 weeks. Holy ****.

Re: NYU Law Class of 2011
I, for one, have no plans to get any books before the section assignments. I want to arrive fresh and open-minded to the first day of classes.
I am thinking to ordering the NYU Law t-shirt or sweatshirt though. Is it the NYU Law t-shirt we are getting on the orientation?

Anyone know whether D'Agostino has any sort of semi-secure storage area for bikes? I don't want to bring mine if my only options are going to be keeping it locked up out front or having it in my room. Also, how much closet/storage space is there in the rooms generally?

Looks like a normal-sized single room closet. There is no storage.

Does someone have a link to the books we are going to need? I want more time to find bargains.NakaNaka wrote:Are any of you guys getting your books/id before the 23rd/24th? I'm in the city so it seems silly not to. I guess all the sections use the same books?

Re: NYU Law Class of 2011
We won't know our books till we get our courses via blackboard, and which teachers we have. We can then look them up.
Question:
When you log into Albert (via NYU Home), and click student schedule, it says First Year courses. On the left of that in read, is a Course ID. Mine ends in -001. Does everyone's end in 001. If it doesn't could that be an indication of section number- ie section 1.

If it is our section then we have a 450 person section.
That's the general course number until we get our section assignment on Sunday of Orientation.

I guess NYU doesn't want us to go bargain hunting for books?

I think they recently jacked the price of Vista up at the student bookstore. I looked before and remember it being $179...now it's $239!!! It seems like my ugrad and law school are the only two universities in the nation that don't get it for $10.99 for something ridiculous like that. I NEED A CHEAP COPY ALREADY!

Someone on the facebook group said we'll be getting our section and book list on Friday but I'm not sure where that info came from.

I requested MSDN-AA access from the University today. It's unclear if we can get access to it, but if we can, you can likely get a free license of Vista Business. I'll let you know if I get access.VaultBound wrote:I think they recently jacked the price of Vista up at the student bookstore. I looked before and remember it being $179...now it's $239!!! From this email sent out to the listserv a couple of weeks ago:bridgetb wrote:Someone on the facebook group said we'll be getting our section and book list on Friday but I'm not sure where that info came from.
Hi Dan,
Each professor selects the materials to be used in his or her class.
Although all first year students will be enrolled in the same courses in
the fall semester, different sections may be using different books.
Unfortunately, there is no way to know which books you will need until
you are assigned to a section.
You will be receiving an email as soon as section assignments are
finalized, on or about August 15. At that time, you can access your book
list through the Professional Bookstore's Web site.
Best wishes,
Melanie

I got my NYU ID.... I thought I would avoid the long lines by going now instead of the orientation. There was a long line anyway.

What did you have to bring with you? Was your university ID number and photo id all you needed?iceman wrote:I got my NYU ID.... I thought I would avoid the long lines by going now instead of the orientation. There was a long line anyway.

This doesn't apply to our class right? Aren't they overhauling this system?

the lottery and trade system is how it works now for 2ls and 3ls (which is what's been happening on coases for the last few weeks). i think they're changing it next year (to a bid system, maybe?).

I would imagine it's not as bad as the article makes it out to be. You know how the media can be, a couple kids doing it and all of a sudden its a huge problem at NYU.gedmem2 wrote:http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2 ... t-nyu-law/

Yup! My drivers license was the photo id and that's all I needed. Some other students in line told me there was a $20 fee but when I got to the line's front, they told me that's for lost or renewed cards. (Mine says it expires 2012, so renewal won't be necessary).decidingagain wrote:What did you have to bring with you? When you get to the front of the short first line, you fill out a form and stand in a second line. This one's longer. At the end of it, you get your photo taken and wait for 5-10 mins. Then they call out your name and hand you your id.

Re: NYU Law Class of 2011
Yes. It's moving to an auction system next year.
Our class will make out OK overall, and the current 2Ls may be a bit disadvantaged.
Essentially you bid on the courses you want with points, points are refunded if class doesn't fill completely, and if class is full everyone in the same round pays the same # of points (the # of points the person bid the least and got in).
It looks like it'll work like this:
2008-2009: Current lottery system with no waitlist, and people e-mailing the mailing list 50 times a day trying to get swaps. 3Ls get absolute priority over 2Ls. 1Ls have our set schedule with 1 choice in the Spring.
2009-2010: New Auction System. 3Ls get 1400 points per semester, 2Ls get 1000 points. We have the same priority for classes, so we can get into any class we want as long as we bid enough.
2010-2011: 3Ls get 1200 points per semester, 2Ls get 1000 points.
2011-2012: Everyone gets 1000 points.
The current system gives 3Ls a big advantage over 2Ls in terms of classes, and the current 2Ls will have to compete with us next year for classes. They're trying to ease the transition between the two systems by giving 3Ls an advantage for a couple of years.
I can't find the current document on the NYU web site since the redesign, but it's cached in Google here:

Schedules have been posted on Albert i believe...it still says Section 1 for me, but now it has professor names, class times etc., so i think it might actually be our class sections now.

I have Fox for torts. How do I determine which section I am in? Are there syllabuses available online somewhere so we can order books, now that we know which profs we have?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
