He said that the street crime is much more aggressive and violent in the Tenderloin than it is in the East Bay.
You are, perhaps, more likely to be robbed but less likely to be shot.
I'm 5'3 and completely not afraid of this area at all but I have the advantage of knowing the city. Thus I can claim I'm unafraid but the reality is, I just know where its safe to be.
I suppose the Tower is on a relatively safe corner but, like the school itself it is on the border of some righteously sketchy areas. And for anyone who says the school itself is in a righteously sketchy area, I refer you to the corner of Eddy & Larkin.

Hi all! I've lived in SF most of my life, up until i came to Davis. But as a high schooler when i was in sf, i roamed the city with my friends in the wee hours of the night, and plenty nights in the tenderloin with not even a scratch on me. So I dont think it's as bad as some people may say. Usually if you ignore them, they ignore you. But if you give them funny looks, which I'm sure many people cant help but do, then that is when the trouble starts.

I think that I'll be going. I've visited campus already, but I'm looking forward to getting the "official" spin on everything.

Quick question everyone,
Im looking at my financial aid stuff... if you accept loans, does that commit you to taking all of it? I ask because Im not sure where I'm living yet and not sure how much of that money I actually need to borrow...

I'm considering going, though I have already visited Hastings last month (not on an admitted students day). What do people think - are these events generally worth attending?

I had a good time at mine. It confirmed all the positives I already believed about the school. If you have the time/money to attend an ASD--I would highly recommend it.

Is there another Admitted Students Day coming up?

Also, any "normal" Hastings class of 2011 guys looking for a roommate in SF? I'm a mid-twenties male with a bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering. I don't smoke or do drugs. I'm very social and really enjoy going out and dancing, but also buckle down to study when required. I'm very easy to get along with and accomodating. =] PM me if you too are trying to avoid the dorms... I would prefer to share a 2 bedroom place than live in the dorms or by myself!

Edit: By the way, thats not me in my avatar ;)

Any USC folks headed to Hastings?

If you guys are in downtown L.A. I would love to get together for a few drinks sometime soon.

All the best,

JA

You could PM me.

Okay, I've come out of retirement to ask a Hastings related question. Did anyone get a Perkins loan in their award letter? If so, do you know what we need to do beside accept it in our electronic award letter? I've already done the Stafford & Grad Plus loans application through Sallie Mae.

Where do you see this? The e-mail I received said:

"You are cordially invited to attend one of our Admitted Student Days, which will be held on Saturday, March 15th and April 12th, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m."

It's on the Hastings admitted students site.

I'd like to know that too. I accepted over a week ago, and still no word from them. Wasn't there some sort of entrance/exit requirement mention?

That link doesn't particularly help.

AFAIK you don't have to do any extra applications for the perkins loan (like the grad+ or Stafford loans).

At least I did nothing special, emailed to confirm after accepting and I received an email back saying that everything was ok in enormous debtville.

Additionally I got an email saying that my BAR loan was accepted. It was rescinded 30 minutes later (As I obviously didnt apply for a BAR loan, but it scared me because it was with the lender I chose.)

For those attending UC Hastings that are interested: The new curve passed. Overall I think this is a positive step for UC Hastings. Looking forward to next year even more. See below.

From: http://www.memoirsofhastings.blogspot.com/

So ASUCH has been working hard with the faculty to get a new, better curve approved. After much work and lobbying, the faculty voted to approve a new curve in their last faculty meeting. Importantly, no faculty member voted against the change, although there were some abstentions. The main changes to the new curve are:

No curve will be implemented for classes under 30 students.

The amount of grades allowed above a B+ have moved from 10%-20% to 15%-25%.

An A+ is now worth a 4.3 GPA.

The amount of grades allowed below a B- are 12%-17% from 20%-35%.

These changes are only applied to next year's classes onward, so they will not help you for your past classes, but it's a positive change for all the current 1Ls and 2Ls.
