I think there might be a team in New Britain but I am not positive. I know there is one in Norwich but that is probably a 45 minute drive. I got a similar vibe from the ASD. I am one year removed from college so still young but I never moved back with my parents and am getting married this summer. I don't think, or maybe just hope that things will be like that at school, there was no need for that question and answer session to last three hours. I feel that people are still a little insecure and unsure of what to expect at law school, I personally haven't been in a competitive academic atmosphere since high school and while I think that things will sort themselves out once people get adapted I really have no idea.

I'm not 100% sure where the minor league sports teams are. I think there is one in Bridgeport and then one in Norwich and maybe New Britian. They move around a lot so it is hard to keep track. There is one in New Haven too, which is very close to where I will be living but probably not anyone else.
I think the vibe you all got from ASW is probably common amongst most schools. I saw the same thing when applying for college back in 99 where people would do similar things. I wouldn't take that to be a representation of what we will be dealing with next year. I am also 4 years removed from college and have been around the world and led upwards of 100 soldiers so it will be interesting, to say the least, to come back to academia.
Bottom line, I think we are all going to do great and make the absolute most of UCONN law. I do look forward to meeting everyone. I am going to look into sports teams/tickets as well as concerts at the Dodge music theater (as lawn seats invite interaction). I was also thinking maybe SIX FLAGS NEW ENGLAND - who's in? We will work out the details later.
I will see everyone soon, I leave Afghanistan in 3 days!!!!!

You know, maybe meeting up wouldn't be such a bad idea. Not going to lie, I think it would help to know a few people coming into law school. And while I didn't feel the need to ask any long questions at ASD, I'll admit that I could have been more comfortable for the first couple of hours. I think everyone was a little on guard, lol.
That being said, I don't really drink. If you guys decide to meet up and do that though, I won't mind showing up. Six Flags sounds okay, as does a baseball game. If I have any brilliant ideas, I'll let you know, lol. Guess that makes three willing to meet up. Anyone else?

Yea, I think meeting up would be EXTREMELY helpful. Another idea is Mosquamicut beach in RI - awesome place with nice waves. I also live close to the beach/marina so if people wanted to come by my place and have a BBQ that would be an idea as well. So so far as ideas we have:

1) Concert (Lawn Seats) at the Dodge Music Theater
2) Six Flags New England
3) Mosquamicut Beach
4) Branford Shoreline (where I live - could mix in a trip to the outlet centers in Clinton/Westbrook as they are awesome!)
5) FOXWOODS/MOHEGAN SUN Casinos - largest in the world
6) Minor League Baseball Game - Ravens/Red Sox/Bluefish
7) Night on the town in Hartford/New Haven

Just need to know what y'all think of these and where we are leaning! We have PLENTY of time to figure this out but it is always nice to have something locked in to look forward to. Let me know! Can't wait to meet everyone!

You'd better believe I took my mother to ASD. She's a refugee from the Vietnam War, a single mother, and woke up at 5:00 AM everyday to go to work to support two kids and put them through college. Her life hasn't been easy, and she's sacrificed quite a bit for her children. I was also hesitant to take her to ASD at first, thinking it would make me look like a baby. But then I realized that I was a being a little shit. My mother deserves, at the very least, to see what her years of sacrifice have produced.
So, you know, to each their own. Apology accepted.

It seems when most people gripe about parents showing up they're referring to the now routine spectacles put on by "helicopter parents." Bringing your moms to show her around and let her see that her kid is making good on all her hard work is a different thing. What seems ridiculous are the twenty-five years olds whose parents call and nag admissions offices every week, show up at the ASD and ask more questions than the students do, ask admissions officers if they (the parents) can show up even if kids don't, etc. And it doesn't stop there either. Apparently it's now "normal" for parents to show up to job interviews with their mid-twenties children, and some have called employers to demand explanations for why their children were not hired, etc. It is silly and sad that some young adults are either unable to function without parental intervention or too dependent and passive to live their own lives.

Seriously? Job interviews? I've never heard of that one, lol. That's definitely kinda strange... What I'm used to is people waiting until undergrad finishes to be fully on their own. But yeah, it does seem that people these days take longer to get out from under their parents' wings. Used to be, you were considered an adult much earlier. So yeah, I see what you're saying.

Wow, I am glad I don't have overwhelming parents, lol. Honestly, I have seen the really annoying, critical of everything parents. As for me, I would have no qualms bringing my mom to events (although I couldn't bring her to the ASD). She's sacrificed a lot for me and she is really proud that I am getting to do things she didn't have the opportunity to do. I don't think I'd feel the same about that if she was one of those "bring my mom to my interview" types though.

BTW, did anyone else get a call from UConn yesterday just to see if we have any questions about the school? It was really nice and gave me an opportunity to ask the little, insignificant questions I didn't want to bother the admissions people with. The girl that called me was really helpful, she even called me back today with some answers to questions she wasn't positive of. UConn, you continue to impress me, keep it up (oh, and a BMW would be VERY impressive, lol).

I love the idea of getting together before law school starts. Knowing people before starting law school seems like a relief. AND, it seems like there are enough people in Hartford who can show us a good time, and I opt for a night on the town in Hartford (because, frankly, I'm not sure how much of that most of us will be seeing upon commencing 1L).

While I was in Hartford for UConn's ASW, I had the chance to walk around the city. It seems fairly spread out - not really a walkable city like Boston. A good friend of mine from back home, who relocated to Hartford, said she does not know anyone who does not have a car there. It'll be a switch for me too, considering I don't drive much (I go to college in Boston) but I suppose I'll have to get used to driving to places eventually.....haha

I would really suggest you look into getting some sort of transportation. People will say you don't 'need' one but it will be extremely difficult without one. The campus is in the far reaches of hartford and while walking may be feasible during he fall it will get old really fast in the winter, especially when you need to get groceries and run other errands. I think the time and aggravation you will save from having a car will make it worth the expense.

I want to know too... After living alone for a year, i'm NOT willing to do that again. But i know no one who goes to UConn so I'm wondering how on earth I'll manage to find roommates. UConn does not have housing, right?

UConn emailed that housing list thing, but I don't think they have a roommate finder. And UConn has no housing on campus, sorry to say. >_<
That being said, I'm also looking for an apartment. As for roommate(s)... I really don't know either.

I am planning on buying a multi family house somewhere in the Hartford area, as I am getting married in August and plan on staying in Hartford after graduation. I think other law students would be ideal tenants/roomates given the similar schedules for commuting/studying. Also, If anyone else has a girlfriend who is worried about the time commitment for school it could really help both of us out.

I sent my seat deposit to UConn about a month ago so I figured I should join in this conversation. Because I couldn’t attend the ASD, this is the closest I’ve been to meeting any future classmates- which I’m pretty excited about.

Did anyone get to read the NYT article about Hartford a few weeks ago (Where Monet Meets the Colt .45/ http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/03/21/tr ... rican.html)? While Hartford may not be a cultural hub like Boston or New York, it definitely isn’t stagnant- There should be plenty of worthwhile stuff for us to do when we’re not studying. Also, while visiting Hartford I noticed that the city doesn't sprawl out into neighboring towns and that a twenty minute drive out of the city can get you to some pretty rural areas. If anyone doesn’t want to live in Hartford, towns like Avon, Canton, and Simsbury seem like a good alternative and a pretty manageable commute.

I’m definitely up for meeting together sometime this summer, so keep me posted.

hey guys hows it going. It's kinda cool to see that you're all really excited about law i'm pretty excited to finally work my ass off too, but I've been struggling with my decision to attend UCONN. I'm graduating UCONN undergrad in a month; and have lived my entire life in CT. I have this HUGE drive to get out of the NE as i'm sick of the miserable Winters.

Not to shit on anyone's parade, but if your not from the North East, buy a UV happy light or something because the dark winters can cause depression.

I to went to the open house, kinda funny afew of you were there then I see you on this forum I thought it was very informative, but like the rest of you found it funny when some people asked questions 1-2 pages long. I was with my gf as well so the whole time I was worried about her boredom haha.

I'll hear from UMD within a day or two, and UF: Levin by early June. By then both UCONN deposits will have been sent.....
So the long and the short of it is that there is like a 50% chance I'll be attending with you all, and if that's the plan we should def. all go out to a club.
