I didn't do anything. Just watched a movie and looked at houses online that we'll be able to afford someday (rather soon).

question ...

i'm coming from boston, and probably won't have a lot of furniture to bring down, so i'm looking for potential furnished places or renting furniture. is anyone else planning on doing this, or am i in the minority here?

I'm bringing my own furniture, but that's just because I'm lucky and my dad and his girlfriend finally decided to move in together, so I get whatever furniture of my dad's that I want! Otherwise, I would have gone to the ikea. The only thing I'd say is that three years is sort of a long time, and you might be happier buying your own furniture at a place like ikea that isn't too expensive and then selling it on craigslist when you leave Charlottesville. Or buying furniture from craigslist, for that matter (I know a lot of people who did this in undergrad). Renting will probably end up being more expensive, and the kinds of places that have a furniture option are probably going to be more tailored toward undergrads.

Graduate Centre has a furnished living room and you can rent room furniture for $45-60/month, not sure about other places.

I looked into renting furniture this year and it will be WAY more expensive to rent for three years than to buy. I would go with IKEA or craigslist. I think craigslist is a godsend. I got a loveseat, chair, and ottoman in good condition for $100!

Plus when you graduate law school it will be nice to already have furniture. Sure, we'll have the money to buy nicer stuff, but furniture is expensive so it will probably take you time to accumulate enough new furniture to fill your new place. So your old furniture would fill your needs until then.

I don't think getting a furnished place is a bad idea, I'd just rather have a place I decorated myself - it would feel more like home. Plus you have to be really careful that you don't ruin anything.

damn, i'm gone for a weekend and this forum explodes!

First, congrats: ubuntu

as for the furniture thing, i'm in the same position. I will be bringing down much of my furniture via uhaul and probably purchasing a few things in c'ville. it's gonna be a pain, but in the long run i save $ and i can't live well without my current bed.

Guy, we're starting to get to you, eh ;) You should travel to DC on the 25th for the DC meet and greet and then head down to Cville afterwards (this is what we're trying to convince Holly to do).

it would be awesome if you guys could all come down for the DC meet and greet on the 25th and then you could head down to cville on Saturday morning. If fact, I miss uva so much, I might go down that weekend, too. TLS party in C-ville!

Is the DC meet-and-greet a formal thing you guys organized or an actual Virginia-sponsored reception? if the latter, anyone care to share details?

Nope, it's something we've coordinated on the admitted student forums.

On Friday April 25th a bunch of us (at least 15) are gonna have a little meet and greet for happy hour (and possibly dinner). If anyone wants to come who hasn't already told me on the uva forum can you PM me so I can make accurate reservations!
