I'm also interested in what people will be doing with their apartments during the summer.wesleybs wrote:How much are you guys paying for rent? I'm looking at the financial aid budget and the amount provided doesn't seem to add up. Are most of you planning on subletting during the summers?

It depends on whether or not I'm going to stay in my 1L place. If I'm staying I'll probably just leave everything there and get stuck paying the rent. If I'm going to move out, maybe I'd consider taking all my stuff out and subleasing it for the summer.

Yeah, I should note that I'm hoping to stay in the same place all three years which is part of why I'm not subletting.gladiator wrote:It depends on whether or not I'm going to stay in my 1L place. Anybody want to help me figure out the economic cost of murder?
Harmony Hills is a residential community with 30,000 households. Assume that 10,000 work for Slimline Foods, making processed meals, and that 20,000 work for Apple's Pies, making deserts. Although Slimline and Apple's are equally distant from Harmony Hills and the same skills are required by the two employers, workers in Slimline are paid 10 cents per hour more than those at Apple's. After some investigation, you learn that the areas where Slimline is located has averaged 10 murders per year compared to 2 per year at Apple's. If workers typically are paid for 2,000 hours per year, what does this imply about the economic costs of murder?

My problem is he isnt clear on what he is asking.
I took it differently - ie $200 per year in exchange for a 10x murder rate.
I'm just not sure what sort of answer he wants.

Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
My thinking was....
10 cents per person per hour
2000 hours
10,000 people
=2,000,000 for the additional murders
8 more murders
=$250,000 per murder
10 cents per person per hour
2000 hours
10,000 people
=2,000,000 for the additional murders
8 more murders
=$250,000 per murder

well you can't just use 8 like that, because the population is different between the two work forces.gladiator wrote:My thinking was....

Are the workers the ones being killed? I thought that wouldn't matter if it's just a general crime statistic for that area not a proportional payment for the likelihood of being killed.
Edit: Sounds like your professor is stupid and needs to learn to be clearer.

I took it as a liklihood of being killed. it goes up 10xgladiator wrote:Are the workers the ones being killed? I thought that wouldn't matter if it's just a general crime statistic for that area not a proportional payment for the likelihood of being killed.

Economic cost to me would imply an affect on GDP.cantwaitforuva wrote:Anybody want to help me figure out the economic cost of murder?

The extra 8 lives lost account for 16,000 more hours of productivity lost due to murder.
So, basically whatever percentage that 16k is in terms of overall productivity would be your net loss in terms of GDP. Or so I think.
Edit: Rough Calculation puts this at 0.08%. That doesn't seem like much until you think in macro terms of something like the US GDP, which in 2006 was ~13 trillion. A loss of .08% of that is ~$10.4 billion. (For reference a company like Intel has $32.4 billion in revenue/yr. in 2005 So, maybe something like ~$20.8 million in lost revenue for each Fortune 500 company. Or so on and son, you get the point. Assuming............
EDIT 2: I'm going to feel pretty dumb if I didn't do the math on that right

Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
ubuntu:
On a tour of Florida, the Pope took a couple of days off to visit the coast for some sightseeing. He was cruising along the beach when there was a frantic commotion just off shore.
A helpless man, wearing a New York Yankee jersey, was struggling frantically to free himself from the jaws of a 25-foot shark.
As the Pope watched, horrified, a speedboat came racing up with three men wearing Boston Red Sox jerseys aboard.
One quickly fired a harpoon into the shark's side. The other two reached out and pulled the bleeding, semi-conscious Yankee fan from the water.
Then using autographed Curt Schilling baseball bats, the three Boston heroes beat the shark to death and hauled it into the boat.
Immediately the Pope shouted and summoned them to the beach. "I give you my blessing for your brave actions," he told them. "I had heard that there was some bitter hatred etween Red Sox and Yankee fans, but now I have seen with my own eyes that this is not the truth."
As the Pope drove off, the harpooner asked his buddies "Who was that?"
The Pope," one replied. "He is in direct contact with God and has access to all of God's wisdom."
"Well," the harpooner said, "He may have access to God's wisdom but he doesn't know squat about shark fishing. How's the bait holding up?"

Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
Worst day ever. My thesis adviser tells me that my thesis which needed to be 20-30 pages actually needs to be minimum 30 pages It is 22 pages right now). Oh, and that I need to provide my own translations of the 30-40 or so quotations of ancient Greek. THANKS for letting me know a week before I need to submit this. I also have two 10 page papers due the same week. So I will finish up the thesis today/tomorrow, and then I'm seriously done. Screw the translations, it's not happening, I'll take a lower grade.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
