Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
At the business school here at northern, they have two wash-out courses. One is Business Law, the other is Business Stats.
Everyone has to take them if you want to get into the business school. The semester I took business law, 1000 students took it, a 72 was an A, there were 20 A's total. Luckily I kicked ass an got one of them, but still . . . the class was insane. A midterm worth 250 pts, and a final worth 500 pts. And not all the questions were worth the same amount of points, and you didn't know which ones were worth 2 pts, and which were worth 50 pts.

UGHH I TOOK ASTRONOMY. my only b- ever i thought we'd be studying the stars but nope - advanced physics. it was bad. my journalism major was not prepared for that BS.bamabreeze wrote:Ugh Astronomy was the worst science for non-majors course for me... It sounds interesting, right? but it was awful, and barely did me any good - I don't even know where the North Star is!
The professor was the spitting image of Mister Rogers, but he was as condescending as anyone could be. I went in for help and he was like, "maybe you are just not good at science." Ummmm thanks, apparently I guessed my way to an A in AP Physics then!

I've never gotten below a B. But I think you'll do fine given that our law school grades (at least for 1L) really matter. I mean I figure you'll work harder in these classes than you might have in ugrad.SgtBilko wrote:Ubu, that is why you got $ from UVA and I did not.

Bilko - I'm with you, man. I saw a lot of C's during fresh/soph year due to high-school burnout.
For the record, I am still suffering from high-school burnout.

I've never gotten a B-, and I've only gotten two B's (one freshman year, one last semester from this psycho bitch), and I'm getting no $$$. Hmm, might have to do with that shitty LSAT of mine! It really makes me wish I had retaken...SgtBilko wrote:Ubu, that is why you got $ from UVA and I did not.

I'm trying to figure out a budget for next semester. Anybody thought about these things?
How much are you guys anticipating for the following:
Food
Personal expenses
Going out/eating out

Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
Whatever money I have left over from finaid once my rent is taken out of that. Let's see... if I'm counting summers into that, that gives me about $600 a month. Assuming that I'm making enough money during the summer to pay for my expenses (including rent), I'll have about $1000 a month. Not to shabby, especially since I have some chump change squirreled away for travel expenses (oh, the glory of long distance relationships). I don't think it's too important to budget each, but rather to give yourself a monthly quota. One month you might go on a shopping spree; another month you might be more social and drink more / go out to eat more.cantwaitforuva wrote:I'm trying to figure out a budget for next semester. Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
I'm definitely going to be over the UVA estimates.
Just rent, utilities, and car stuff is going to run me almost $2000.
So food/other expenses is gonna be tough.
UVA only bugets for $1750.

I'm sitting here regretting not applying to more schools. It sounds like UMich would've been the perfect place for me (Japanese legal program, on-campus housing, law school actually being in the same place as undergrad classes), but I was too lazy to send in my app (they had even waived my fee!). Somebody cheer me up. Why are you all going to UVa or why shouldn't I wish I had applied to UMich?
if you say "UVa's close to home," I'll cry. :'(

It's not too bad. The summer's are a bit humid and hot from what I've heard, but not too crazy. In winter it doesn't snow much and you're not gonna get the crazy temps like Mich.shadowfish wrote:Very true!gladiator wrote:Michigan is COLD.

I am from northern VA, so 2 hours north of Cville, but the climate is lovely. Warm, but not too warm. The air is also ridiculously clean... I couldn't get over it. It just smells better there. I'm sure there will be some hot, sticky summers... but it'll be worth it for all those BEAUTIFUL fall/spring days.shadowfish wrote:Very true!gladiator wrote:Michigan is COLD.

I didn't apply to Michigan -- it just doesn't appeal to me the way UVA does. I know they're considered to be similar schools, but the fact that the closest big city is DETROIT instead of DC is unfortunate. I also vastly prefer the preppy pseudo-South to the mid-West.

I hadn't thought about ... *shudder* Detroit. I'm not such a fan. And I do have family in DC. Ann Arbor doesn't look so small itself, though.
And having never left Washington, I know nothing about culture anywhere else around the nation. I do have to say that I really value politeness (hence no Northeast city-schools for me), and it seems that Virginia has lots of that. I don't know about the midwest, though; haven't spent much time there. :/
ps no offense if you're from detroit. I've just heard some bad things.

Re: UVA Class of 2011 Housing Thread
You mentioned UMich's on-campus housing. It's gross. I'm not sure why you would want to live there. They don't have kitchens and you share bathrooms and showers with the whole floor. It's worse than all of ugrad housing. Not to mention the rooms are very small, old, and over-priced.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
