i'm glad i can post in this thread now and meet few of my fellow summer starters

i'm so excited about michigan and can't wait to begin! i have a question for people who may know...would it be a good idea to bring a car? i read that parking's not convenient and the bus system is free, but it seems a car would still be convenient (mainly groceries come to mind). do most law students have a car?

Bring a car if you can. Michigan such a car oriented state, and Detroit is underrated as a city.

Anyone else worried about off campus housing...I'm mostly concerned about the length of a lease and potentially moving out twice

Housing in Ann Arbor is pretty reasonable. If you don't mind living ten minutes away in West Ann Arbor you can get some great deals and you have easy access to the interstate. Even in the nicer areas, you're looking at vary reasonable rent compared to any of the big city schools.

I live about 3 miles off of campus and I have a roommate. I have washer/dryer/dishwasher/fireplace balcony 2 bed/2 bath 2 parking spaces and it comes out to $515 (cabletv/wireless/electricity) a month. Super cheap.

I would recommend a car...I don't know about lawyer's clube people, how they manage with/without a car, but I also have the impression that they rarely leave campus. All of their meals are provided (except Saturday night) so they don't need groceries. On campus has restaurants, marts, and supply stores. There is shopping within walking distance, bars, etc.

I always lived in campus in undergrad, but decided I wanted a little bit more out of housing. I also wanted the option of getting away. The buses are convenient (and free) and I don't regret my decision to live off of campus.

p.s. I have a friend who lives in (more or less) downtown AA, a few blocks from the LS. he has a nice (albeit cozy) one bedroom and pays about 750 monthly. My bf has a 1 bedroom within walking distance and pays about 900. You need to shop around if your goal is to be very near campus, bc it seems a little bit hit-or-miss.

How necessary is a car? I have one now, but I'd rather not have to deal with parking, insurance, etc. while in school. Is there any information concerning how many students (1Ls in particular) have one? I went to undergrad in Boston, so my desire is to revert back to the lifestyle of walking everywhere I need to go. And I'd happily pay a higher rent to be close to campus, if not in the Lawyer's Club.

Are May leases common in Ann Arbor? I live all the way out in the West Coast and am hoping I don't need to sublet so I can move all my stuff right away.

I wouldn't be surprised if you can get them. Here in Ithaca, they're pretty common (also a college town) since people graduate in May.

Places are usually pretty split between August and May leases.

Yeah, most of the leases here (Berkeley) start and end in May too. I'll only have a few opportunities to fly out there to visit and look for housing, so I'm really hoping the search will be painless!

Let me be more specific: Will I be at a disadvantage without a car? Does the car recommendation apply only to those who don't have housing near campus? Aside from Hog, do any of the future Wolverines here plan to bring one?

I imagine I'll make my decision by wandering around Ann Arbor when I visit, but I'd like to get an idea of the situation beforehand.

I'll have my car for sure. But then again I can't live without a car. I had a car as an undergrad at Columbia.

I went to undergrad without a car all four years, but we had a train directly into a major city (Philly). I know Ann Arbor has a great transportation system internally, but I'm not sure about how easy it is to get from AA to Detroit or Chicago.

I'd consider getting rid of my car (or storing it) if I moved to Chicago or New York. But, especially living off campus, I just wouldn't feel comfortable without a car.
