I just booked my trip for next weekend - to go in June was more than double the price. Anyone going to be around/in Ann Arbor?

So I guess it's official now. Leiter reports Shapiro to Yale.

Huge blow to Michigan, huge bump for Yale. Yale's jurisprudence and overall philosophy program are now at their strongest in Yale's history.Lothar wrote:Rayster wrote:Does that mean Shapiro is officially leaving for Yale?

It depends on whether offers are made.
Michigan, in general, has a strong pull with scholars. They can afford to make offers to other high level faculty, and since Michigan is so highly regarded in the academic community, those high level people take such offers seriously. Michigan philosophy now has two vacancies to fill, and odds are they will fill them with jurisprudential stars of the same caliber as those who left.

Can you qualify these? Do you mean relative to the entire pool of credited law schools? relative to its peers in the t14? I'm just curious.and since Michigan is so highly regarded in the academic community,

Shapiro was the professor they hooked me up with to talk about the law school and the curriculum.

I hope they are aggressively courting replacements. Any speculation on who they will try to nab? Hopefully not the embattled Yoo.

It's just the way of the world... profs are constantly coming and going. I had a conversation with Dean Z about this, because a guy I called for phonathon was really worried about it (though, oddly, before anyone had announced leaving), and I wasn't sure what to say to him. She said that it would be more indicative of trouble if other schools weren't trying to poach our profs. And, of course, we have several offers out there to do poaching of our own.

eh, about a 15-20 minute walk I'm told. I haven't done the walk yet. Its not too bad and should be nice in the summer. we'll see about winter. But it is only an 8-minute walk from kerrytown. And its near main street. I was looking for a nice neighborhood for my daughter, thats why I went a little farther out.

That sounds good - just far enough away from the college wildness I'm sure you'll appreciate that too!mildmannered wrote:eh, about a 15-20 minute walk I'm told. I haven't done the walk yet. Congratulations for finishing finals! That must be a huge relief! If you are a 1L and want to be on a journal, this would be the time period in which you'd be writing something to get on, is that correct?
I am driving out May 20, and should I arrive late on the 23rd. That gives me 4 days to settle into my sublet before orientation.
preparation question: I have not done a thing re: buying books, or doing reading, etc. I figured that I would handle that during that 4 day period. Does that sound reasonable? If there are reading assignments for the first day of class, they won't even be posted until orientation anyway, right?

Yeah... all journal application stuff is due 5/12. I don't think any of my friends have started on it yet... needed at least yesterday off! There was MUCH celebration on Thursday.
Buying books, etc. during orientation or on the weekend between orientation and classes is definitely reasonable. The only reason I would buy books sooner is that I'm cheap, so I prefer to buy them online. But I don't think you'd want to do the reading very far in advance, because you'll want to have it fresh in your mind for the first day of class.
I don't remember when assignments were posted except that it wasn't all at once... some of them were further in advance than others.

Good luck with the journal apps, A.! You'll do great, I'm sure.
I just got back from graduation. Can't believe it's our turn next.

I didn't go this year, bc I really only had one 3L friend. But I'm definitely going to yours!
And GCoop would say... you're not next bc there's still FAKE SCHOOL graduation in December.
