Wow. Alright. My conversion is currently being processed. Maybe Monday I can call in and have my application withdrawn. I've got 9 months of Chapter 30 left.

Thank you very much.

Yeah, I need to call them on Monday also. Because I found out about this about 15 mins after I submitted my application and then called them and sent them a fax that same day asking them to not process my request. Unfortuatly I got a letter in the mail today telling me that My Eligibility for the Post 9/11 GI Bill was confirmed with 3.5 months of benefit. So I think they ignored my fax. Hopefully I can fix this on Monday, if not, oh well, At least I got my UG paid for debt free.

You called them? What did they say? "Send us a fax and we'll take care of it."?

I did not have a claim number at the time as they had not even recieved my online request by the time I called them, so they gave me a fax number to send a signed fax asking them to not process the request. In the standard VA manner, they never actually said they would take care of it.

I'm kind of used to getting initially screwed by the VA (Being a 10% disabled Vet), but it normally works out in the end. Hopefully it will this time.

No since worrying about it this weekend, nothing you can do until Monday.

That is COMPLETE AND UTTER BS (not on your part on the part of the VA) I've had an application for benifits in for over 2 months and I have yet to receive a letter telling me how many months I have and at what percentage. So there's no way that in 15 minutes they processed your claim and came up with your bennies. If that's the case then I should've had a letter 2 months and 10 days ago. Nice try VA--how about they cut the crap! I would not take that answer from them.

He said that he called 15 minutes after, and at that time they didn't have a claim number for him yet. 8)

Yeah, I should have probably noted that this phone call was back in May and I just got the letter today.

Apparently they've already approved me for transfer of benefits. :( I think I'll write to a Congressman. It's a bit of a shame that there is a poorly documented and irrevocable decision to make that is the difference between 36 and 48 months of benefits.

Thanks for your help.

Got a notification from Berkeley Law today that they will be participating in YRP next year! $5,000 per student x 10 students (which should be enough to cover everyone eligible in 2011/12/13).

With the matching $ from the VA, it mostly wipes out the tuition increases.

The news won't show up on gibill.va.gov for some time since the VA isn't yet taking program agreements from schools.

Quick advice to fellow vets (sorry if this has already been posted):

If you have anything approximating 12 months of Chapter 30 remaining (like me), then use the Chapter 30 first, and then switch over. By law, any remaining Chapter 30 months switch directly to Chapter 33. However, if you have 0 months of Chapter 30 remaining, and then switch over to Chapter 33, the benefits reset to 12. So, for example, John has 9 months of old GI Bill left. He transitions to the new GI Bill for law school and gets 9 months of new GI Bill benefits. Bob also has 9 months of old GI Bill left. He uses his old GI Bill during his first year of law school. In the summer, he transitions to the new GI Bill and now has 12 months of new GI Bill entitlement.

In my own case, I have about 12 months of old GI Bill remaining. Because I'm not making a great deal, I'll get almost maximum need aid from Yale (minus ~13k from the old GI Bill). Then I'll transition to the new GI Bill, and my last 12 months at Yale (which participates in the YR program) will be 80 percent covered by the new GI Bill. I checked with a couple of different VA coordinators to confirm this. Your entitlement cannot exceed 48 months, though. So if your old GI Bill somehow covered more than 36 months (I'm not sure this is even possible), then you'd get less when you transitioned to the new program.

Good Advice. Been posted before, but always good to remind vets and tell the new people on the people what is up with Chapter 33 benefits. I'll go ahead an repost my PSA from an earlier time.
CyLaw wrote: TITCR, talked with the VA the other day about this, and they confirmed that if you exhause you Chapter 30 benefits, then apply for Chapter 33, you get 48 months - (How many months you ACTUALLY used you chapter 30 benefits), up to a maximum of 12 extra months.

So, assume your spring semester is 4 months long, and you have 2 months left of your Chapter 30 benefits. If you convert to Chapter 33 then you get 4 months of Chapter 33 (The 2 months you are entitled, then the additional 2 months they are required to give you by law to ride out the semester). If you hold off on applying for Chapter 33 and use Ch. 30 instead, you get 4 months of chapter 30 for the spring semester. Then you can later get 48 - 38 = 10 months of Ch. 33. (38 months is 36 months you were entitled Ch 30 + 2 extra months under the termination policy stated previously).

UCLA accepts the YRP... They cover 50% of the J.D. fees, and then the other 50% is matched by the VA, resulting in a more or less free law education from UCLA. I thought that it should be changed on the first page since it's confirmed.

Thanks!

im still mad about how the time is calculated for reservists, after 2 tours overseas on my first enlistment contract I still won't be eligible for YRP because I have less than 3 years Title X time. The way they are deploying us now is using tons of ADT/AT orders for 3 months of premob training.

Duckz, that really is awful, and you guys are certainly getting shafted. I'm shocked that there is no way your command can work with VA to work with schools to help you eligibility get greased in. I know of several fellow soldiers who have been rear det weenies their entire military career and will be receiving YRP bennies while folks like you get screwed b/c of a DA oversight. Sucks =-/

Also, on the first page, Berkeley DOES do YRP, but it's only $5,000... regardless, "NO" is wrong. Does anyone update the first page anymore anyway? If not, can I?

http://www.gibill.va.gov/gi_bill_info/c ... t_2010.htm

This link lists all the schools which are currently participating. More importantly, it lists level at which they are participating and the number of number of yellow ribbon students they are willing to allow. Many schools are participating at lower levels (contributing only a few hundred dollars) with only a few available slots. Cost is a big concern for me, so I'm concentrating on those few schools that are participating at the highest levels (several thousand or max) with unlimited slots. Some of the best schools in the country (including Harvard, Michigan, and Cornell) are participating at that level, fully subsidizing the education of student veterans.

Everyone be advised, I have been in touch with a few admissions offices about the particulars of what the VA website lists
(http://www.gibill.va.gov/GI_Bill_Info/C ... t_2010.htm). Remember, each school administers their YRP differently and the VA (surprise, surprise) might not have the most accurate info listed.

Wake Forest, for instance, does not explicitly list what "graduate" programs their YRP is for, but it doesn't matter because the ones available to the law school are already in use by existing students and, therefore, they have none to give out.

Washington & Lee has 4 "graduate" YRP slots listed on the VA website, but according to their office they only technically have 2 more to give out (for the same reason as above). They also specifically require you pay all of your seat deposits and some other things before they will consider you to be eligible for it.

Just thought this might be informative for some of us, personally it changes how/when I will decide to commit to a program.

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.
